About me & my blog

Visiting the penguins

Welcome y bienvenidos to the Worldview de Mama blog.  My name is Valentina Garcia-Gerdes and you’ll mostly find entries and photographs written by me.

When I first starting blogging I was only writing about my adventures of being a stay at home mom and about teaching my son to be bilingual. But I’ve evolved and I’m continuing to add pages and other ideas.  I still write about my Spanglish family life but I now I want to be more nimble and write about other cultures and traditions, family trips both local and statewide and happenings. I’m also obsessed with my Nikon so you’ll see more photography being posted.

I’m a writer and independent contractor for a local social media marketing company and available for freelance gigs. I can write long form and short articles, press releases, blog posts, and reviews of your family friendly event, show, park or venue.  If you have a story idea or have something you want to contribute I welcome your worldview. I enjoy visiting other Websites that I find are resourceful and I will always appropriately credit the writer and the blog by adding external links. I’m grateful for those who return the favor.

Now more about me

My husband and I moved our family from Denver, Colorado in May of 2010 to the Raleigh, NC area.  During that time I also decided to become a stay at home mom (SAHM), leaving behind a 12 -year journalist career. But I’m happy to report that I’m happy about our decision and I’m truly blessed for having a DH that supports my path.  I met so many amazing people during my time in Colorado to whom I’m forever grateful.

I began my career at La Voz, a funky little bilingual weekly and reported and focused mainly on Latino immigrant issues. Being an immigrant to the United States myself I felt empowered to write about what I knew and about what moved me. I was always amazed and humbled to tell the stories of people’s struggles and triumphs as they came to the United States.  I then went to work for Univision, Colorado at their newly minted Assignment Desk.  I was hired by 9NEWS the NBC affiliate in Denver to work at their morning assignment desk, a job and a station that I couldn’t pass up. I loved my time on the assignment desk and was schooled by some of the best photographers, writers, anchors and producers in the industry.  In 2008 Gannett, the parent company for 9NEWS launched a website community for mothers called Momslikeme.com.  I’m proud to say that when I left 9NEWS we had nearly 16,000 members and vibrant community of women, whom I still call my mommy friends.

I’m a stay at home mother and I wear my soccer mom badge proudly!  I’m also an advocate for dual language and immersion schools, freedom of speech, journalism, social media, good and playful parenting, immigration and immigrant rights among other things.   I love to cook, be with my family, travel, take photos, garden and I to explore and venture off the beaten path.  I’m learning to love to write again.

Nice to meet you Valentina. I am a mom to four kids–2 step daughters, and 2 bio sons. My youngest son is attends a dual language Spanish immersion program in our local school district. I am not bilingual even though both my parents spoke spanish. My husband, born of immigrant parents from Colombia, is bilingual. Good luck raising your child to be bilingual. I think it is an invaluable gift to give your child.

    Valentina –
Love your blog. I’m trying to raise bilingual Twins; kids are smarter than we think and learning two languages from the get-go will benefit them immensely! Keep up your Great work!

    ¡Hola Valentina!

I read your post on SpanglishBaby and left you a comment there. I’m from the Dominican Republic and currently live in NYC. However, we are to relocate to North Carolina next year (just visited last week and loved the Raleigh area) and I am pretty excited about the new beginning. I am raising my daughter to be bilingual as well and I am currently pregnant with my second child. I hope we can connect, my twitter handle is @lafamiliacool, I hope to “see you” around.

    Saludos afectuosos,

    Dania
